This is the Cybercab, Tesla’s robotaxi with which Elon Musk wants to change the way people move
Elon Musk claims that taxi drivers are on their way to extinction, as Tesla presents their self-driving Cybercab.
“The future has to look like the future.” This is how Elon Musk describes the design of his new Cybercab, a robotaxi with which Tesla aims to take autonomous driving one step further and change the way we get around big cities. At the same event in which he presented Optimus, Tesla’s first android assistant (openly inspired by C3PO, from ‘Star Wars’), the tech magnate and owner of X announced that these new vehicles are planned to arrive in 2026 at a price of less than $30,000.
Although the use of autonomous vehicles has not yet been approved on many roads, Musk is convinced. “I am probably being a little optimistic with the deadlines, but the Cybercabs will arrive in 2026. Before 2027 for sure.” They will charge 20 cents per mile and the businessman fervently believes that “the cost of autonomous transportation will be so low” that it will even replace public transport. “It will be considered individualized collective transportation.”
Although no data was offered on the profitability of the project for investors (nor on the production of the Cybercab, for analysts), it was reported that they will not need plugs or the hardware until now linked to this class of vehicles. Tesla assures that they will use inductive chargers and will be based on artificial intelligence and an intricate camera system. “No steering wheel, pedals, or driver.” Musk believes that taxi drivers are like the elevator operators of the 20th century and estimates that cars will be used “10 times more” if they work autonomously and shared. “Nowadays, most of the time they stand around and do nothing. That will change.”
Far from being the only car model presented by Tesla at ‘We, Robot’ (that’s what the event organized by the company was called), The Cybercab came accompanied by the Robovan. It is a vehicle with capacity for 20 people that acts as a bus, truck, or van and offers the same advantages described above, but with larger dimensions. Its appearance was one of the most talked about at the celebration and left another phrase from Musk that we will see how he ages. “We will change how roads look”.
