This is the Dead Sea, the earth’s lowest and most peculiar body of water
The lowest land-locked body of water, that also happens to be extremely peculiar because of its ecosystem and composition: meet the Dead Sea.
We know that Mount Everest is the highest peak above sea level. At almost 9,000 meters high, the mountain rises to impressive heights. However, under the ocean there are also structures that descend to the seabed. The Dead Sea is the lowest land point on Earth, since It is more than 430 meters below sea level. It is the deepest salt lake in the world, a place whose saline waters prevent the proliferation of living creatures, hence its name. Even so, sometimes life makes its way, since some fungi and bacteria live inside.
According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the Dead Sea basin is endorheic. In other words, the water has no river outlet to any of the oceans. Its main source of water is the Jordan River, but its channel has been decreasing because water has been diverted from the river. And where exactly is it located? The lake is located between several countries: Israel, part of the West Bank (that of Palestine) and Jordan.
What is the most inhospitable place on the planet?
You will not hear people or hear the noise of cars. You will not suffer the hustle and bustle of the big city nor will you enjoy the colors of the countryside. The Earth hides fascinating places, but also inhospitable areas, almost off-limits to humans. One of these locations is the so-called Pole of Inaccessibility, aka Nemo Pole. This name was given in honor of the mythical character from ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’, the novel by French writer Jules Verne.
It is located in the southern Pacific Ocean, in an area with a sea depth of 3,700 meters. As it is uninhabitable, one of the uses we have given it is as a spaceship cemetery.
