Tim Burton reveals some secrets behind ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, including that he didn’t do it for the money

From not rewatching the original before filming ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ to claiming money was never part of the conversation, Tim Burton has some choice words about its upcoming film.

Tim Burton is promoting ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice′ at the Venice Film Festival, even though the movie is not participating in the competition. As a result of this, Variety collected some of the director’s quotes about the development of the film, like how he “wasn’t out to do a big sequel for money or anything like that, I wanted to make this for very personal reasons”. Furthermore, he revealed that he “didn’t watch the first movie to prepare for this. I remembered the spirit of it and I remembered everybody here.”

At that press conference, the filmmaker was together with Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and Jenna Ortega. The former spoke about her experience on the set of ‘Beetlejuice 2′, commenting on what she experienced on the recording set, stating: “I really looked up to a lot of this cast, it was really wonderful to have already established a working relationship with Tim because he’s somebody that I trust immensely and I really enjoy working with him.”

‘Beetlejuice 2′ saved Tim Burton

Going a little deeper into those possible personal reasons, Tim Burton explained in an interview with Variety that he was disillusioned with the film industry, so he realized that he needed to do something “from the heart”, so ‘Beetlejuice 2′ was that lifeline he needed at that time. “For me, this movie was a reenergizing, a kind of getting back to the things I love doing, the way I love doing it and with people I love doing it with.”

And before ‘Beetlejuice Beetleuice’, the director was recovering that energy by making ‘Wednesday’ (Netflix series). “We were trying to shoot as a TV thing but on a movie schedule, which was kind of fun in a weird way, so I was thinking about that beforehand. But then meeting Jenna was obviously such an important thing for me.”

‘Beetlejuice 2′ will be released in theaters around the world on September 6th, 2024.
