The Lord of the Rings: what is Tolkien´s “Dagor Dagorath”, the series´ end of the world
Tolkien created an extremely expansive world for Middle Earth and The Lord of the Rings, to the point where he even planned an end for Middle Earth.
Tolkien had it all in mind when he imagined the universe of ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Just as the world had its conception, it would also have an end. The Dagor Dagorath would devastate Middle Earth just as her characters knew her. What the author drew as the conclusion was eventually discarded, but the signs it left over the years could not completely hide it.
The story behind the end of the world in ‘The Lord of the Rings’
During the creation of the Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien wanted to close the book by fulfilling the prophecy of Dagor Dagorath. In the original writings, it appeared in full, but his son Cristopher made the editorial decision to eliminate it from the version that would eventually hit shelves. The author referred to the event as “the end,” the definitive conclusion in a world in which the protagonists of both sides of history collide in the ultimate battle. That it closed the universe may be the main reason why it was discarded.
Tolkien was inspired by Norse and Christian mythology to make his own ‘Ragnarök’. Dagor Dagorath would show a battle of epic scale with Morgoth as the protagonist. It is said that the villain will break free of his chains and break the Gates of Night to attack Arda and the Valar. But his goal was also in the sky. It pointed toward the Sun and the Moon so that the planet would not have a single reason to continue existing.
The two sides are very marked. The Valar will have the help of the Free Peoples, that is, elves, dwarves, and humans together on the same mission, who will join the troops of Ar-Pharazon. On the other hand, Morgoth will make Sauron resurrect without the need to possess the One Ring, who will be deployed accompanied by the 9 Nazgul. Dragons will appear in the sky and balrogs on the surface, who will command the orcs and trolls that complete the army.
Morgoth and Sauron both die. In fact, it was the hero Turin Turambar who ended the first’s life. The darkness is lost in the battle of battles. It is said that the Ainur will sing new music by reuniting with humans and elves, ending the story of Arda to create a new, separate chapter of Middle-earth.
