The director of ‘Top Gun Maverick’ and ‘F1: The Movie’ recalls when he wanted to bring the two together in his own film.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt almost crossed paths in one of the best motorsport films of recent years
Joseph Kosinski leaves us glued to our seats with every project he directs. ‘Top Gun Maverick’ was spectacular and proved once again that Tom Cruise is in top form. Now, with the recent ‘F1: The Movie,’ he’s achieved the same effect, this time with Brad Pitt and a key license from the world of motorsports. But Kosinski’s interest in the genre dates back a long time. He once wanted to bring the aforementioned two together in a film that ultimately ended up in other hands.
This is the film in which Kosinski wanted to pair Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise
It’s ‘Ford vs. Ferrari.’ Kosinski presented an ambitious project to portray the legendary motorsports rivalry of the 1960s, with each star on a team. That is, Brad Pitt would face off against Tom Cruise in on-track scenes that were planned to be 100 percent driven by both (as reported by Variety).
However, the production team wasn’t clear on the film’s profitability. The budget was “insane,” although this isn’t something that surprises those who follow the director’s films. Apple, among others, took on the stratospheric expenditure on “F1: The Movie” and greenlit the film with Brad Pitt as the chosen choice.

The original project ultimately ended up in the hands of James Mangold (“Logan,” “Indiana Jones and the Rise of Skywalker”), who chose a completely different duo: Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
