Tom Holland follows Robert Downey Jr.’s lead with his Spider-Man: “I would be so content swinging off into the sunset”

The famous actor is about to premiere ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ though he’s already thinking about the future of his character and the MCU.

Update:

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is one of the biggest movie releases of 2026—and not just in the superhero genre. After all, Spider-Man, as the most popular comic book character in history, consistently delivers box office hits with every new film, especially since joining Marvel Studios. And everything points to his fourth solo installment as part of the MCU being a massive hit: the stratospheric numbers from its first trailer suggest just that.

Despite everything, Tom Holland, the actor who plays the current Peter Parker/Spidey, is already thinking about his future retirement and how he’d like to pass the torch to the next Spider-Man. And he has the perfect role model: his on-screen mentor, Robert Downey Jr.

Tom Holland is already thinking about saying ‘goodbye’ to Spider-Man

After all, like everything else in life, nothing lasts forever. And it seems that Tom Holland has fully come to terms with this when it comes to thinking about the future of his Spider-Man. That’s why he’s already thinking about passing the torch to another actor or actress, whether it’s for the arrival of a new Peter Parker or another version of the arachnid superhero; certainly, there’s no shortage of possibilities.

“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Tom Holland said in an interview with Empire. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset,” the actor concluded.

Let’s recall that the 30-year-old actor made his debut as Spider-Man in 2016 as part of the large cast of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ having been recruited by Iron Man to take part in the clash between the superhero factions led by Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. In 2017, he returned to the MCU with his first solo adventure, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ and later appeared in the crossovers ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018) and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019).

In 2019, he continued his solo saga with ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ while in 2021 he broke box office records with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, now as part of the current multiverse storylines alongside Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men. Now, the fourth installment of Spidey’s MCU saga arrives, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’) and featuring other characters such as the Hulk, the Punisher, and Scorpion, with Sadie Sink likely playing the mutant Jean Grey.
