Tony Pankhurst, the curator of The Dark Pictures Anthology, has died

Tony Pankhurst, the UK actor who has been the face of the Supermassive Games horror game series, The Dark Pictures Anthology, passed away recently at the age of 67.

The news was made public by Supermassive Games themselves through their official Twitter/X account, in which they published a short message memorializing the actor. “We are all saddened to hear of Tony Pankhurst’s passing. He was the face of The Curator, and we loved working with him.” As it happens, the passing of the actor actually happened on May 9, 2024, but it wasn’t made public until now.

The studio provided a recent donation to the actor’s family, with a tribute page for Pankhurst stated that any donations would be sent to “Hospice in the Weald”, an organization that helped care for the actor in his final weeks. His family described Pankhurst as “a Seagull through and through,” in reference to his love for the Brighton Hove Albion Football Club, and thanked attendees to his memorials for wearing the teams colors, Blue and White, instead of the traditional mourning Black. A mysterious face behind a beloved character

Pankhurst had smaller roles as a supporting actor in some pretty big films, such as Legend, Star Wars: Rogue One, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He also had an active career in television, appearing in a variety of productions throughout the years.

Fans of Supermassive will remember his face, as ever since the inception of the series it was his likeness that gave life to The Curator, the mysterious character that acts as a connection between all of the games and whose mysterious identity and presence hinted at something larger going on, or perhaps just as a cheeky way of connecting the various stories in a way akin to old-school TV serials.

However, the character is played through voice and motion-capture by actor Pip Torrens. But Pankhurst did get to play The Curator when House of Ashes got a live-action trailer a few years back, which indicates that he was involved in more than just the initial 3D model for him.
