Avengers
Tony Stark (Iron Man) died a year ago at the age of 53
The first of the Avengers defeated Thanos after a hard-fought battle with the fate of the universe at stake.
Today, October 17, 2024, marks the one-year anniversary of the date when, according to Marvel books and canon, Tony Stark sacrificed his life to defeat Thanos and thus save the universe. The Mad Titan, who sought to defeat The Avengers in the past could not do the same with his version of the future, thanks to the heroics of an Iron Man who gave his life to bring society back to normal.
Tony Stark’s redemption before dying
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos managed to execute the snap with the Infinity Gauntlet after a tremendous battle that took place on the planet Titan, where Tony Stark and part of the Avengers could not defeat the villain, so the owner of Stark Industries, after going through a heavy depression (and surviving being stranded in outer space) but with the help of his family, was able to get ahead, although with a thorn in his side.
Five years after Infinity War, Tony Stark, retired and hidden in a house in the woods with Pepper Pots and their daughter Morgan, received a visit from Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff and Scott Lang, who presented him with a plan to modify some events in time and thus be able to save the people affected by Thanos’ snap, including Peter Parker.
After a conversation with Potts, where she encouraged him to do the right thing and try to save the fallen, Stark goes to the Avengers center, where they begin to travel through time to gather the infinity gems again and thus redo everything that happened in the previous battle.
On that path, Natasha Romanoff also died, sacrificing herself on Vormir to obtain the soul gem. When the rest of the Avengers find out the news, they understand that they must save the rest of those affected by Thanos’ snap and that the death of Black Widow can not have been in vain.
Now in 2023 and with all the gems, they realize that Thanos from 2014 (the one from 2023 was dead) travels to 2023 because the Nebula of that time activated the quantum tunnel that allowed him to travel in time. At that moment is where Tony Stark knows that he is sacrificing himself.
Tony Stark’s sacrifice for the Avengers
Before the final fight, there is an important moment, when Bruce Banner put on the Nano Gauntlet, with which he manages to reverse the snap, so all those who disappeared returned to the present, without knowing what happened to them previously.
The decisive battle against Thanos for the fate of the universe began with The Avengers looking to strike first, something that at one point worked, until the villain recovered and revealed to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America that his new objective would be to eliminate the entire population and thus rebuild it in his own image.
The fight continued, with the Avengers at a disadvantage, until one moment several portals opened with the rest of the fallen superheroes in Infinity War, who with a “Avengers, assemble!” of Captain America, they went for Thanos and his henchmen, in order to try to defeat him in a last group effort.
In that group effort, Tony Stark used his last move, which was to quickly remove the gems from Thanos, in order to use his gauntlet created with his nanotechnological armor. Downey Jr.’s character says “I’m Iron Man” and thus manages to snap his fingers, suffering irreparable damage to his body, which causes his death, but with the goal that he managed to defeat the Mad Titan.
After the death of Tony Stark, The Avengers understood the sacrifice that this superhero made, who sought the good of humanity for something personal.
