Top 5 Thanksgiving movies and where to watch them online

Before the family arrives, how about watching a movie of the day?

Hannah y sus hermanas

Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays we celebrate as a nation. On the fourth Thursday of November, families sit down to a hearty roast turkey dinner and give thanks for the year. It is almost as important as Christmas, and it is a holiday that, like many others, has been portrayed in popular culture. Television has done a great job of depicting it, as evidenced by the many hilarious episodes of Friends, but it has also been depicted in the movie industry (we can debate whether Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is a Thanksgiving movie because of one key scene). So let’s go with a top of the best feature films where this holiday is present.

‘Hannah and Her Sisters’ (1986)

  • Director: Woody Allen
  • It can be watched at: Apple TV, Amazon Video

One of Woody Allen’s best films is also his best Thanksgiving movie. Starring Mia Farrow, Michael Caine and the director himself, the film follows the dramatic arc of Hannah and her sisters over the course of the holiday. A dramatic romantic comedy as only Woody Allen can do it.

‘The Ice Storm’ (1997)

  • Director: Ang Lee
  • It can be watched at: Amazon Video and Apple TV (both rent)

Ang Lee (‘Brokeback Mountain’) directed his fifth film about a disintegrating family in the mid-1970s dealing with alcoholism, sexual liberation and infidelity. All this in the midst of an ice storm on Thanksgiving night, the most tumultuous of all.

‘Pieces of April’ (2003)

  • Director: Peter Hedges
  • It can be watched at: MUBI, Prime Video

April is an independent girl who lives with her boyfriend, Bobby, in a rundown apartment. On Thanksgiving, she invites her parents over for dinner to meet her partner, but discovers that her oven is broken and begins a desperate search for a new one, meeting her new neighbors along the way.

‘Krisha’ (2015)

  • Director: Trey Edward Shults
  • It can be watched at: Prime Video

‘Krisha’ was the directorial debut of Trey Edward Shults, who cast his own family members. The plot, a dramatic thriller, revolves around his aunt and her mental decline, which explodes on Thanksgiving night.

‘One Special Night’ (1999)

  • Director: Roger Young
  • It can be watched at: Prime Video, Fubo

Starring veterans James Garner and Julie Andrews, this tv movie tells the story of the characters' chance meeting during a storm on Thanksgiving Day. They have to stay together that night, and some time later they meet again and begin a relationship.
