Valve sets new pre-order date for the Steam Controller after launch issues and limited availability
Valve introduces eligibility requirements and a confirmation system following the hardware’s troubled debut.
Following a chaotic launch in which everything that could go wrong did go wrong—with demand outstripping supply, some payments failing, pricing errors, and other issues that left buyers without the product—Valve has announced a new release date for the Stream Controller.
Another chance to buy the Steam Controller
In a post on Steam, the company announced that pre-orders for the Steam Controller will reopen tomorrow, May 8. The pre-order period will begin at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT, and will be limited to one controller per user. Each user will be able to place a pre-order, after which they will eventually receive an email to confirm the pre-order, and will then have 72 hours to complete their purchase. “When we go back in stock, order emails will be sent in the same order that reservations were made.”
However, not everyone will be able to purchase the Steam Controller directly this time around, as Valve has announced the following requirements for pre-ordering it:
- Customers who have already purchased a Steam Controller are not yet eligible to reserve another Steam Controller.
- Your account must be in good standing on Steam
- You must have made a purchase on Steam prior to April 27, 2026
Valve also notes that following this period, the first shipments will be sent out next week to users in the United States and Canada, followed by the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. The system is similar to the one used for the original Steam Deck pre-orders, although this time, delivery will be much faster.
