Valve warns Steam Controller shipments could extend into 2027 as demand exceeds expectations
Valve admits demand exceeded expectations and outlines new delivery timeframes for existing pre-orders.
Getting a Steam Controller will still be a challenge in 2026. The success of Valve’s new hardware exceeded the company’s initial estimates, leading to a chaotic launch. And even though there was a recent restock, as well as changes to how users can purchase this accessory, some may have to wait until 2027 to get one.
In a post by Valve, the company provided an update on Steam Controller pre-orders, noting that they realized “initial demand exceeded our expectations,” with demand surpassing what they “can make by the end of the year.” The company wants to “manage expectations” regarding how hardware distribution will look in the coming months; starting today, the Steam Controller page will display a timeframe indicating when you can expect your order confirmation email, depending on when you pre-ordered it.
When can I expect to receive my Steam Controller if I’ve already pre-ordered it?
According to the Steam website, users can expect to receive their controller within one of three time frames:
- By September 2026
- By December 2026
- In 2027 (with additional information on specific timing to be announced)
This is only for those who have already expressed interest in making a reservation. However, those who are interested and don’t mind waiting can still make a reservation and find out at that time when the “estimated order availability” will be.
Valve’s system will remain the same as it was for the second round of Steam Controllers. Users will be able to reserve one, and when the time comes, they will receive a notification email giving them 72 hours to complete their order. If they do not do so, they will be removed from the list, and the next user in line will be notified.
