Embracer Group closes Volition, developer of Saints Row and Red Faction
On August 31, 2023, Volition released the following statement on its LinkedIn profile, announcing the closure of the studio by its parent company, Embracer Group.
“The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We’ve been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight,” the statement begins. “This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.”
“To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts,” the studio concluded.
Volition was founded in 1993 as Parallax Software Corporation and changed its name to Volition, Inc. in 1996. A name they kept until their closure almost three decades later. Their first game was Descent (1995), released on MS-DOS, PlayStation, Mac and RISC OS.
The titles and sagas you will undoubtedly know this company for are Saints Row and Red Faction. Red Faction is a saga of first and third person action video games that was born in 2001. The latest installment was Red Faction Guerrilla: Re-Mars-Tered (2018), a remaster of the 2009 original... On the other hand, Saints Row was born in 2006 with the first installment, and the last was a reboot released in August 2022.
