Wardens Rising seeks to give a twist to tower defense coming from Brazil

During gamescom latam we had the opportunity to meet Wardens Rising, a title developed in Porto Alegre that seeks to mix tower defense.

Attending shows like gamescom latam allows us to get to know titles beyond the ones we are in contact with daily: AAA games and big productions from the usual studios. It is like entering a microcosm of games and voices that we do not usually get to hear in these parts. Through one of the many presentations that took place on the show floor, we had the opportunity to meet Wardens Rising, a title that mixes the genres of tower defense with an ARPG.

Given the interest in this game, we had the opportunity to speak with Ígor Ferreira, Game Producer at Big Moxi, the studio developing this title, based in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

A mix of genres

But what is Wardens Rising? The title is a mix of a tower defense strategy game and a shooter with ARPG elements. The goal of the game is to control the Wardens, “super-powered warriors,” as Ferreira describes them, who are tasked with defending the Synthesis Cores, which, according to the game’s lore, is “energy that is vital to humanity.” In this way, the game is divided into two phases: one in which we have a top-down view “where you place your defenses and establish your strategy”, and another in which we jump into action “where you control your hero to defeat this huge invasion of enemies.”

On the other hand, and something Ferreira noted about how Wardens Rising differs from other tower defense titles, is that everything becomes scalable on each map. Aside from the fact that we have “this build and fight cycle” between each invasion, the game promises that by having “a lot of enemies heading straight for the cores, each invasion gets bigger and bigger across the map.” Each of these maps features different biomes, which will have their elemental advantages and disadvantages as you play, weighing in on the planning as you defend against each invasion.

Part of the fun of the game is the Wardens, which Ferreira describes as a group of heroes very similar to the “Guardians of the Galaxy style, not as funny, but more heroic. “These characters have their own style and personality, and within the story of the game, they are able to use synthesis cores to activate their superpowers.

In addition, the game has a mode that can be played either with a single player or in teams of up to 4 people. Ferreira commented that “communication is not as critical as in a MOBA or a PVP game” because it is a mission-based PvE game.

For now, Big Moxi plans to release Wardens Rising on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in early 2025.
