Warner Bros. Games
Warner Bros. Games will now only make Batman, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones and Hogwarts Legacy games
The million-dollar losses of games like Suicide Squad or MultiVersus have led the company to change its business model.
When it’s time to report financial results, it’s also time to make decisions. And if companies that are doing well, such as Nintendo, are forced to please and reassure investors by sharing part of the Switch 2 catalog for 2025, what won’t those who have suffered a hole in their pockets have to do? When Rockstar Games itself has been forced to come out and give the approximate release date of GTA 6! How could the more than 200 million losses of Suicide Squad: Kills the Justice League not cause an earthquake at Warner Bros.?
Watch for statements from the company’s CEO, David Zaslav, at the shareholder meeting. “We’re through some of the worst — and it hasn’t been pretty on the gaming business — but we have four games that are really powerful and have a real constituency that love them, and we’re going to focus on those four primarily. We’re going to go away from trying to launch 10, 12, 15, 20 different games. I think we have a real chance now with focus to have the gaming business be steadier.”
“We have four strong and profitable game franchises with loyal, global fans: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC in particular Batman.,” Zaslav said. These four franchises have a lot of loyal fans and are profitable,” Zaslav clarified, “We are focusing our development efforts on those core franchises, with proven studios to improve our success ratio.” The first one is already on its way. It’s the newly announced Hogwarts Legacy 2, which has become a top priority for Warner’s games division.
Which games will Warner leave up in the air?
Now the million dollar question is, what franchises are we going to miss out on? What experiences will we miss? Among the big names of Warner Bros. games that were left out of Zaslav’s speech are sagas like Middle-earth (Shadows of War and Shadows of Mordor), Scribblenauts, FEAR and Injustice. But the company had also given shelter in recent years to names like Back 4 Blood, Mad Max and the recent MultiVersus. So is this good or bad news?
