WH-1000XM6, review of the new benchmark in headphones

Sony’s new top-of-the-line headphones arrive with improved noise cancellation and a much-needed foldable design.

Sony has once again made waves in the world of high-fidelity audio with the launch of its new WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones. After several weeks of use, we have finally reached a verdict. Below, we give you all the details of our analysis.

Design

Its minimalist and elegant design remains unchanged, now with a finish that is slightly more resistant to fingerprints. In addition to the classic black and silver colors, an attractive blue color has been introduced, which is the model we tested. This new generation not only refines the features that made the series so popular, but also corrects one of the most criticized changes in its predecessor: the non-foldable design. This model returns with an ingenious hinge mechanism that allows them to be folded for storage in their compact case, an essential feature for those who travel or are constantly on the move.

Sony has also worked on comfort, redesigning the headband for better weight distribution and making the vegan leather ear pads removable, making them easier to replace when worn out. All this makes for a more comfortable user experience, even during long periods of use, which we have in fact tested on flights lasting more than 4 hours.

State-of-the-art noise cancellation technology

This series of Sony headphones has earned its reputation for unmatched noise cancellation, and the XM6 takes this technology to a new level. At the heart of this improvement is the new HD Noise Canceling QN3 processor, which Sony claims is seven times faster than the QN1 found in the WH-1000XM5. This chip works in conjunction with a system of 12 microphones, twice as many as in the previous generation, resulting in more precise and adaptive noise cancellation.

  • Adaptive noise cancellation: The new adaptive noise cancellation optimizer constantly analyzes your environment, atmospheric pressure, and your usage style (even if you wear glasses or a cap) to adjust the cancellation level in real time, ensuring perfect silence regardless of conditions.
  • Sound quality: developed in collaboration with audio mastering engineers, these headphones aim to reproduce music exactly as the artist intended. Although they retain the same 30 mm diaphragm, there is a noticeable improvement in vocal clarity and more controlled bass than in the previous model.
  • Autonomy and connectivity: the battery offers up to 30 hours of playback with noise cancellation enabled. Its fast charging system allows you to get 3 hours of music with just 3 minutes of charging.

WH-1000XM6 vs. WH-1000XM5: Is it worth the upgrade?

While the WH-1000XM5 headphones were a major advance in noise cancellation and call quality, the XM6s are presented as an evolution, more focused on the user experience.

For those who already own the previous model, the decision to upgrade will depend on whether the following improvements justify the additional cost.

Conclusion

While the WH-1000XM5 already offered an outstanding audio experience, the new WH-1000XM6 refines the design and technology, offering improved portability and noise cancellation that, while an incremental improvement, consolidates Sony's position as the leader in this segment. For users who value portability and seek the latest in technology, the XM6 is the natural next step.
