What are Tokien Silmarils, the gems that drove the gods and elves of Middle-earth mad?

The Silmarils are three great jewels created by the elf Fëanor from a substance known as Silima and the essence of the two Trees of Valinor. These jewels were sacred, indestructible, and shone with their light even in the dark, reflecting beautiful shadows. They were considered the greatest work of the elves and were coveted by many. Thus, they were consecrated by Varda so that no impure or evil creature could touch them without being burned. Moreover, according to the prophecy of Mandos, they would be tied to the fate of Arda.

Everything seemed rosy, except that Melkor was in Valinor at the time, and it was he who coveted the Silmarils. He destroyed the Two Trees and stole the jewels after killing Fëanor’s father, setting off a series of wars and tragedies. Melkor set the Silmarils in a crown, but burned himself after touching the jewels, leaving his hands permanently black and sore.

Sometime later, in the year 466 of the First Age, one of the Silmarils was stolen by Beren and Lúthien, causing conflicts that led to the death of Thingol and the fall of Doriath. The sons of Fëanor tried in vain to recover the jewels in successive slaughters until Elwing took one to her husband, Eärendil, who sought the help of the Valar. After the defeat of Morgoth, the two remaining Silmarils were stolen by Maedhros and Maglor, but their grief drove them to throw them into the fire and the sea. It is prophesied that the Silmarils will be recovered and light will be restored to the world at the end of time.

When do the Silmarils appear in The Rings of Power?

These three wonderful fictional jewels, brought to life in Tolkien’s Middle-earth works, appear in the first season of The Rings of Power. They are mentioned in the second chapter when alluding to the legendary Hammer of Fëanor, which was in Celebrimdor’s workshop.
