What does ‘Pluribus’ mean, the title of the latest series from the creator of ‘Breaking Bad’?
We discover the meaning of the enigmatic word that gives its name to the Apple TV+ phenomenon by Vince Gilligan.
If you are one of the lucky viewers who have started watching ‘Pluribus,’ the new Apple TV+ series by Vince Gilligan—creator of the acclaimed ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’—you have probably wondered what the title means. Well, here we are going to resolve this small but important question about the television phenomenon of the moment that everyone is talking about. This unexpected science fiction series is receiving acclaim from both critics and the public.
This is the meaning of the title ‘Pluribus’
The term pluribus, as you may have guessed, comes from Latin and literally means ‘from many’. It is also a direct reference to the American motto E pluribus unum, which translates into English as ‘Out of many, one’. This motto was chosen by the First Committee of the Seal of the United States in 1776, at the beginning of the War of Independence. It symbolized the union of the Thirteen Colonies that rebelled against Great Britain to achieve their independence. Interestingly, the motto itself has thirteen letters, like the number of founding colonies.
Over the years, this American motto has taken on a much broader, even patriotic meaning, reflecting the plurality and diversity of the different peoples that make up the United States, especially due to the immigration that came to America to build the country. But returning to Vince Gilligan’s new series, the title itself hides a detail that further reinforces its meaning: in fact, the series is titled ‘PLUR1BUS’, with the number one replacing the letter ‘I’, giving even more meaning to the concept of unity on which its surprising plot is based.
Gilligan himself recently acknowledged that ‘Pluribus’ was the first title that came to mind when naming his new series, although he hesitated, thinking that perhaps the idea had come to him too soon. After trying dozens and dozens of other options, he finally settled on his first choice: “Now I can’t think of a better title. It feels right to me.”
The author also acknowledges that the title is, in fact, “a nod” to the unofficial motto of the United States, but clarifies that “the series is not intended to be solely American,” as he stated in a recent interview: “I really want this to be a show for the whole world. And I liked the idea of out of many, one, in reference to the democracy of the United States, but also out of many people from all around the world, one,” Gilligan continues.
“The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness,” reads the cryptic official synopsis. “An astronomer’s discovery turns the planet upside-down; curmudgeonly novelist Carol Sturka is terrified by this strange new world.” Starring Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, Carolina Wydra as Ana, Leixandre Gómez Davi as Will, and Carlos Manuel Vesga as Manusos, this is a surprising science fiction series that has left viewers around the world eager to learn more about this unexpected new world.
Pluribus is available to watch in the United States on Apple TV+.
