What happens if I don’t pay extra for Amazon’s Prime Video? Cost and exclusive content

Two important options within Prime Video have disappeared for subscribers who do not pay the additional fee that went into effect a few days ago.

Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service began inserting commercials into its programming at the end of January, as confirmed last year in certain territories, including the United States. But in addition to the commercials, users of the streaming service have also noticed that not paying the extra $2.99 has taken something away from their shows and movies.

Prime Video changes with commercials and fewer features

Now, the entry-level Prime Video subscription no longer includes the Dolby Vision HDR or Dolby Atmos options. And no, this is not a technical error, as the removal of these features that help improve both video and sound quality is a deliberate action by the Prime Video team and that these options are no longer part of this tier of payment, as reported by The Verge. The media outlet shares a brief but direct statement from one of Amazon’s spokespeople, Katie Barker: “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities are only available on the ad free option, on relevant titles.”

The new Amazon Prime prices for 2024

As announced at the end of September 2024, Prime Video would come with changes and new prices. To remove these commercials, subscribers would have to pay an additional $2.99 per month to continue with a streaming that would allow them to watch their TV shows or movies in a more direct way.

Prime Video is part of the Amazon Prime subscription, which also includes Prime Gaming, Amazon Music, for a total of $14.99 per month, or $139 per year. Adding this $2.99 represents an increase of 18%. For its part, the Prime Video subscription alone costs $8.99 per month, and to which you will have to add these $2.99 if you want to eliminate commercials and have Dolby Vision and Dolby Armos back.
