The streaming giant has reached an agreement to buy Warner for around $83 billion and expand its catalog of series and movies.
Netflix recently closed a historic deal to acquire Warner Bros. and all its associated studios and brands, including the HBO Max streaming platform, which until now had been one of Netflix’s rivals. This follows a purchase of around $83 billion to significantly expand its catalog of movies and series, including powerful brands such as Harry Potter, DC, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, among many others. But what will happen now to existing HBO Max accounts?
The future of HBO Max lies with Netflix
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, following the separation of Discovery Global, the company that currently owns Warner Bros. and HBO Max. Once the purchase is complete, Netflix will enjoy a significant increase in both subscribers and productions as part of its catalo,g thanks to the addition of Warner and HBO’s major audiovisual works, both current and historical.
As a result of this merger, Netflix intends to add HBO’s entire library and the rest of Warner Bros.’ productions to its catalog as part of its application. This means that big names such as ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘House of the Dragon,’ ‘Friends,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘The Sopranos,’ ‘Westworld,’ ‘Peacemaker‚’ It: Welcome to Derry, and True Detective, as well as films such as Harry Potter and DC movies—including classics such as ‘Casablanca’—will become part of Netflix, “giving subscribers more of what they love, defining the stories of the next century,” as noted by CEO Ted Sarandos.
This vast catalog will be added to Netflix’s existing lineup, which includes big names such as ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Money Heist,’ ‘The Witcher,’ and ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters,’ to name just a few of the platform’s biggest hits. Thus, what is already the largest streaming platform today will become even bigger and more comprehensive when Netflix’s agreement to purchase Warner is finalized.
All in all, the HBO Max platform itself will disappear definitively when the purchase is confirmed at the end of next year, although Netflix has not yet confirmed this. Even so, it seems like the logical step after a purchase of this magnitude, although we do not know if Netflix will offer a section under the Warner/HBO label within its platform or if it will directly incorporate the Warner catalog as part of its own offering, without any differences or labels. It seems unlikely that both platforms will continue to coexist, as Netflix has assured that the addition of new content will allow it to attract a larger audience.

Thus, the incorporation of all this content should be automatic, with the resulting changes in account conditions, eliminating the independent HBO service and applying new rates that allow Netflix to finance a historic purchase in terms of money. Everything points to a single subscription being maintained instead of two separate ones, although Netflix prices are likely to rise after the assimilation of HBO. However, current Netflix users will continue to access their usual content through the same platform.
