Summer Game Fest

What not to expect at Summer Game Fest Live, according to Geoff Keighley

It’s better to set your expectations low when it comes to game announcements, and it seems like Summer Game Fest won’t be an exception.

After an amazing 2023, hype is at an all-time high when it comes to new game announcements. And with Summer Game Fest Live set to happen this week fans all over the internet are knee deep in speculation, hopes, and dreams of their most highly awaited games finally revealing themselves in some way shape or form. But alas, it seems like SGF host Geoff Keighley himself wants to keep expectations at a moderate level.

As such, if you’re waiting for some huge announcements, a “one more thing” at the end of the show, or huge franchises that have been away from the spotlight for many years to come back, you’re in for some disappointment. “It’s not really one of those shows,” explained Keighley in a recent stream about the upcoming show. “Our shows don’t typically have that. There will be, definitely, new announcements, but the show is largely focused on, I think, existing games that have new updates for fans.”

During the stream, Keighley confirmed a few titles that will be absent during his show. This means that the following list are some of the games that fans should not expect in any way shape or form during the event, but could still appear in another of the many game conferences set to take place throughout the summer. The list of games the host confirmed will not be at SGF Live 2024 is:

  • Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
  • Kingdom Hearts 4
  • The Wolf Among Us 2
  • Judas
  • Any future Five Nights At Freddy’s games

SGF is not the place for big reveals

Later on, Keighley explained that he believes SGF is manly aimed at giving updates about already announced games, while leaving huge announcements for his other big yearly event: The Game Awards. “Game Awards has a lot of usually big surprises - we’re thankful for those - and big, new reveals. This [SGF] is largely focused on announced stuff,” he said. There definitely are things that are being announced but this is not a show that has a lot of like ‘coming in 2026′ or ‘2027′, or teasers for games that are years and years out... That’s generally what I would say in terms of expectation setting.”

So what could we expect from the show then? There’s no telling exactly what surprises there will be, but it’s already been confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Metaphor: Refantazio will get new trailers or at least some time under the spotlight.
