What to expect at today's State of Play? Length of the event, announcements and news

Sony will present today the games that will be released this 2024 on PS4 and PS5, among which is expected to have news of Astro Bot, Concord, Horizon, PS VR2 and more.

Bang, did you hear that? It’s the start of the Summer Game Fest, the successor to the mythical E3. Sony will be the first company to present its games and news for the coming months, and it will do so this afternon in a State of Play that you have time and how to watch it here. Eager for surprises and news about PS4 and PS5, let’s take a look at everything that has been rumored and leaked in recent hours to know what to expect from the conference.

Length and games of the state of play on May 30th

Sony’s press release leaves little to the imagination. The State of Play will be “more than 30 minutes long” and will feature “a total of 14 titles.” In other words, it will be short and sweet. It will focus on “PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2″ and can be watched on the brand’s official YouTube, Twitch and TikTok channels starting at 6:00 pm ET. We at MeriStation USA will be providing you with up-to-the-minute coverage, as well as compiling and analyzing everything that is announced.

No big franchises

Let’s start with the bad news. A few months ago, when it published its financial results for last year and its forecasts for 2024, Sony confessed that it expects a decline in PS5 sales and confirmed that it will not release new installments of its “great franchises” until 2025. So take note: no more waiting for games of the caliber of God of War, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, or Uncharted. It’s time for the secondaries to shine and for PlayStation Studios to show off its wares.

The best announcements from the last State of Play

The last State of Play in January 2024 brought us the remaster of Sonic Generations, the announcement and surprise release of Silent Hill: The Short Message, the presentation of Metro Awakening for PlayStation VR2, the return of Until Dawn with a PS5 version, and the most impressive trailers such as Death Stranding 2. No one should rule out that many of these will be repeated tonight.

For the previous event, we have to go back to September 2023, and it was much weaker, with the stars being the content of already-known titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. And if we go even further back, to February 2023, the same thing. There were few surprises and only new trailers for Resident Evil 4 Remake, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Suicide Squad: Kills the Justice League.

In other words, don’t get caught up in the hype, because there aren’t enough precedents to make a big deal out of it. It is a State of Play, not a Showcase. It is the smallest of Sony’s events.

Lego Horizon Adventures

The saga of Guerrilla Games and Aloy is one of the most talked about. There has been talk of a remake of the first game (which has mysteriously disappeared from the PlayStation Store), has long been confirmed the existence of a multiplayer project around his world and in recent hours has sounded strongly the possibility of an ambitious collaboration with Lego in the way we have seen in Fortnite. Considering that there are already several construction sets of the series... attentive because it could be the big surprise of the night.

New Astro Bot

The closure of Japan Studio is a wound that will never heal, but Sony has at least kept Asobi Studio, the creators of Astro Bot, and obviously has done so to develop a new installment of what is today its most successful platformer. If the first game in the saga is one of the best virtual reality games and the second one is one of the best PS5 games, what can not become a third installment with more time and resources behind it? What if it were accompanied by a remaster of the original for PS VR2? Anyway, it wants to be the star of the night.

Concord’s official presentation

It was expected for the State of Play in February, but today should not pass. Concord is one of the games confirmed by Sony for 2024. A multiplayer online shooter for PS5 and PC that will try to emulate the success of Helldivers 2 and will serve as a letter of introduction to Firewalk Studios, developer bought by PlayStation just a year ago. With the support of all the first parties, Firewalk will try to surprise us with a project set in space and said to be strongly inspired by ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. We’ll see how it goes.

God of War Ragnarok on PC

Billbil-kun, the well-known insider who always leaks PlayStation Plus games before they are announced (and without a single failure), has already advanced that the arrival of God of War Ragnarok on PC is imminent, so Sony should not delay any longer in confirming it. Considering that the previous one arrived and looked luxurious and that the last exclusive that was on its way to components is already on the platform (Ghost of Tsushima), the company should update its roadmap and bring Kratos to PC.

PlayStation VR2 compatible with PC

It may be the riskiest bet on the list, but in the last few hours, a Sony patent has appeared on the Internet to make PlayStation VR2 compatible with PC through an adapter. Considering that it has already developed one to play with the first model of the glasses on PS5, it would not be surprising. What would it do? Well, it would certainly open up the device to many games currently only available on PC and without a PlayStation Store version. So the glasses could be used in them. Who would have thought that after a lifetime of dreaming about Half-Life Alyx on PS VR2, there might finally be a reward, albeit on PC, not console. It would be a defibrillator for the peripheral that seems to be on the verge of death for some time now.

A new Resident Evil Remake?

And we close with a handful of likely games that keep repeating themselves and would fit perfectly in the event, as there are precedents for similar announcements in State of Play from a few years ago.

  • New Resident Evil (REmake Remake? RE 9? Resident Evil 5 Remake? Code Veronica?)
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
  • Silent Hill 2 Remake
  • Until Dawn Remastered

What is your bet and your biggest wish for this afternoon?
