Star Wars

What’s happening with Star Wars Eclipse, the game by the creators of Detroit: Become Human

Star Wars Eclipse seems to be in trouble, as the main writer of the game has left Quantic Dream after a decade with the studio.

Star Wars Eclipse

Star Wars Eclipse is a similar case to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Both were announced years ago, when their development had just begun. A long period of silence followed. Time passed and problems became evident. In the case of KOTOR, the project has changed hands: Aspyr handed over the lightsaber to Saber Interactive and the game seems to be far from reaching the market. Meanwhile, Eclipse shows no signs of life since September 2023, when Quantic Dream confirmed that the title was still on the way. But now the person responsible for the script has left the studio behind Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human, and that does not seem like the most promising news.

“After almost 10 years at Quantic Dream, I am leaving to found a new studio – together with a group of very talented designers and developers,” explained Adam Williams in his Linkedln profile. “We can’t say much yet, but we are working on something very innovative and special, which is very secret at the moment. I’ve already been in touch with many of you guys at Quantic Dream and Lucasfilm, to thank you for everything on Detroit and Eclipse. It’s been a great adventure.”

Star Wars Eclipse development is slow

Lisa Pendsi, vice president of marketing at Quantic Dream, denied almost a year ago that Star Wars Eclipse had been canceled. As she revealed, the project was still underway, although development was progressing little by little. “Can I say it still exists? Because it exists. It’s just not ready. It’s simmering. One of the big focuses we’ve had when we announced Star Wars Eclipse was to make sure it was clear that this is actually an action adventure game that has all of the elements that you would come to expect and want from a Quantic Dream title, which is intricately branching narratives, multiple playable characters. There’s no game over. Anyone can die, anything can happen and the story sort of continues so that those signatures are still there.”

Star Wars Eclipse was announced at The Game Awards 2021. It has been defined as the first video game in the saga set in the time of the High Republic, the same period as in ‘The Acolyte’, although the latter takes place in the final stages of this era. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor introduced several flashbacks to the High Republic, despite the fact that the main adventure occurs years before ‘A New Hope’.
