WhatsApp announces which versions of Android and iOS operating systems will cease to be supported very soon. Update your mobile if you do not want to be left behind.

In June 2025, WhatsApp will undergo another major change in terms of compatibility with certain Android and iOS mobiles. As time goes by, this messaging application is being updated to adapt to the latest hardware and to the new needs and security measures that must be implemented to ensure secure use. If you have an Android phone with a version lower than 5.0, or an iOS device with a version prior to iOS 12, it is time to update your operating system -or change your phone to one that supports later versions- or you will not be able to use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp will be updated in June 2025, and you won’t be able to use it if you don’t update your operating system

On June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will cease support for older versions of Android and iOS operating systems, making many old or outdated mobiles unable to use this application. According to the support website, we must have our mobiles updated to the following versions:

  • Android: version 5.0 or later.
  • iPhone: iOS version 15.1 or later.

Thus, Android phones such as Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Sony Zperia Z1, LG G2 or Huawei Ascend P6 will no longer be able to use WhatsApp. Users of iPhone mobiles such as iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s or iPhone SE first generation would face the same problem.

The company justifies this decision as a necessity dictated by the number of users: less and less people use older cell phones with obsolete versions of their operating systems, so they cease their support while developers focus on continuing to update and improve the app for a greater number of users on more modern versions of the operating system and terminals.

WhatsApp reminds us that there will not be a “shutdown” without further ado, but that if our phone and operating system are among those that will no longer be supported, we will receive notifications detailing that we must change the terminal or update the OS to continue using the app normally.
