When does ‘Alien: Romulus’ take place in the franchise’s timeline?

‘Alien: Romulus’ is aiming to be one of the biggest movies of 2024, thanks in no small part due to it being part of Ridley Scott´s Alien franchise. But where does it fit in?

Alien

Uruguayan director Fede Álvarez has been chosen to direct the new installment of one of the most terrifying classic franchises in cinema. ‘Alien: Romulus’, which will feature the production of Ridley Scott, who leaves behind ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’ to immerse himself in another terrifying story. Until now, it was not clear when in the series’ timeline it would be set, but actress Cailee Spaeny has revealed it in statements to Variety: It will take place between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’.

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” said Spaeny. “They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

In ‘Alien’(1979), Lieutenant Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, faces a lethal threat. After an agonizing escape from her own spaceship, she manages to escape and return to civilization. Just a few years later, ‘Aliens’ tells the next chapter in Ripley’s life, as she and a crew of marines head to investigate an altercation on a space colony, which of course has to do with xenomorphs. For now, It is unknown if the events narrated in ‘Alien: Romulus’ will be related in any way to Ripley’s story., although it has been defined as an independent film within this universe.

Fede Álvarez, director of ‘Evil Dead’ and ‘Don’t Breathe’, among many others, recently stated that Ridley Scott has already seen the movie. Knowing that the person responsible for ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Gladiator’ is critical of the work of others in his works, Álvarez was a little nervous, but Scott loved it: “Fede, what can I say, she’s fucking good.”

‘Alien: Romulus’ will be released next August 16 2024 in theaters. Disney+ is also preparing the first series based on the saga, which has been delayed until the first half of 2025.
