When does Star Wars Outlaws take place in the series’ timeline?

Star Wars Outlaws, the new Star Wars game by Massive Entertainment published by Ubisoft, is set in a dangerous period for the Galaxy. But when exactly?

Star Wars Outlaws

In ‘Star Wars’, it’s usually implied that some time passes in the universe between each movie, which has allowed the saga to expand with new adventures starring its many characters. Comics, novels, and video games have defined some aspects that were not narrated in the big screen, and of course, Star Wars Outlaws is not going to be an exception. The Ubisoft game takes place during the classic trilogy, so it is located in the final stage of Darth Sidious’s tyrannical regime.

In the specific case of this product, players will not embody any of the heroes from the films, but rather will play Kay Vess, a scoundrel who craves freedom above all else. The game is set between ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’, an interesting moment in history because most of the villains are still alive: on Tatooine, Jabba The Hutt is the leader of a criminal syndicate that spreads its tentacles throughout the galaxy. Meanwhile, the Imperials have lost the Death Star, but they have struck a blow against the Rebellion.

This is how ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ ends

At the end of ‘Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back’, Luke discovers that Darth Vader is his father, the emperor orders that young Skywalker be sent before him, they freeze Han Solo in carbonite and Boba Fett takes him to Jabba the Hutt. During this period, the adventures that establish the plot premise of ‘Return of the Jedi’ take place, some of which have not yet been fully explored.

In this context, the plot of Star Wars Outlaws portrays a dangerous universe, focused on the world of criminals, gangsters, and bounty hunters. “Working on ‘Star Wars’ is incredible, but working in this period blows my mind,” director Julian Gerighty told MeriStation. “It’s my childhood, It’s like going through a time portal and being able to play with my toys again. What has excited me the most is going back to the original films and analyzing how they were made: their production design, art, the different objects, the tactility of things... "

Star Wars Outlaws will be available from August 30 on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
