With the announcement of the iPhone 16, Apple has been gearing up for the release of iOS 18, its latest operating system packed with new features and improvements. iPhone 16 users will get the update right out of the box, while other compatible devices will receive it before. But among those new features is the arrival of Apple Intelligence, the company’s own integration of Artificial Intelligence into its software and phones. So when is it coming, and what will it be all about?

When will Apple Intelligence be released?

As of right now, there isn’t a definitive release date for Apple Intelligence. However, the feature is coming to certain iPhone devices through a staggered release schedule that’ll see it arrive in devices in more and more languages until it eventually makes its way to the rest of the world.

October will see the launch of Apple Intelligence in U.S. English, and will quickly expand to include localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. in December, with additional language support — such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish — coming next year.

Additionally, apart from the newest models (namely from the iPhone 16 line and upwards), only a few Apple devices will be getting this update:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (A17 Pro)
  • iPhone 15 Pro (A17 Pro)
  • iPad Pro (M1 and later)
  • iPad Air (M1 and later)
  • MacBook Air (M1 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (M1 and later)
  • iMac (M1 and later)
  • Mac mini (M1 and later)
  • Mac Studio (M1 Max and later)
  • Mac Pro (M2 Ultra)

What is Apple Intelligence?

The marketing people at Apple have labeled Apple Intelligence as “AI for the rest of us”, which doesn’t really explain what it’ll actually be able to do. However, they’ve revealed certain hints about what it can do: this new system is designed to leverage the things that generative AI already does well, like text and image generation, to improve upon existing features.

Trained on the company’s own large information models, the system use deep learning to form connections while it sees you work, be it image, video, text, or more. This means that there will be writing tools that are able to provide help while writing on your device, capable of interacting directly with app like Mail, Messages, Pages, Notifications, and more. It can proofread and write messages for you, summarize information, and even imitate your tone and style to write for you (supposedly).

Apple Intelligence also does image generation, in a similar way to how other AI systems have been doing so far. Apart from having its own image generation app, through which it can create content via prompts to be shared and used as you wish, the company also touted the capability of generating custom emojis for you.

Otherwise, you can think of this new feature as a massive upgrade for Siri, which will let the smart assistant to integrate seamlessly with everything you do on your iPhone already.
