‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ has hit theaters, and beyond being a celebration packed with Easter eggs and direct references to the Super Mario series, the film opens the door to the company’s other franchises—though for now, there are no plans for a connected universe. Which cameos from other Nintendo franchises appear in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’?
R.O.B. - The little robot that assists the protagonists in Gateway Galaxy is inspired by R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy), one of the first accessories released alongside the NES during its launch in the United States in 1985. R.O.B. is a historic symbol for Nintendo, as it played a key role in the strategy to revive the industry following the 1983 video game crash.
Pikmin - Before meeting Fox, Peach and Toad are searching for a space pilot. In one of the scenes, a spaceship appears, crewed by the tiny Pikmin—the iconic creatures created by Shigeru Miyamoto that debuted on the GameCube in 2001. With four main games in the series, the most recent one (Pikmin 4) is available on Nintendo Switch.
Fox McCloud - Although his appearance had already been teased, Fox McCloud makes an appearance in the film. He is the protagonist of the Star Fox series, which debuted on the Super Nintendo in 1993. Over the course of seven games, Fox has defended the Lylat System from Andross’s attacks, with ‘Star Fox Zero’ on the Wii U marking his most recent appearance in video games.

Mr. Game & Watch - During the final battle, Mr. Game & Watch makes a brief appearance in the form of a (terrible) illustration by Luigi. The character is a direct homage to the Game & Watch line of handheld consoles, released between 1981 and 1991.
