Who is Adar in ‘The Rings of Power’? A character that tricked us with Sauron and changed actors
The second season of ‘The Rings of Power’ on Amazon Prime brings back Adar, the mysterious character from the first season, although with a new face.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ premiered its second season on August 29 on Amazon’s Prime Video. The trailer shown a few weeks ago introduced us to a multitude of characters and settings, some of them never seen before, while others were old acquaintances from the first season. One that may have taken many viewers by surprise is Adar, the mysterious leader of the orcs and villain from the first season, who looks different because Joseph Mawle, the actor who played him, decided to leave the project and Sam Hazeldine is now in charge of giving life to this fearsome character.
So who is Adar in the grand scheme of Tolkien’s world? He is a leader of the orcs who is in search of a powerful weapon that is in the hands of Theo, the young boy from the town of Tirharad, and which he ends up obtaining in the first season. The mutilated elf was originally thought to serve Sauron, but in the end, it was not like that, and the series ends up showing us his origin and the reason why the orcs worship him. Adar has lived for thousands of years and is even able to remember Beleriand, the subcontinent of Middle-earth that was destroyed by the violence that raged in the War of Wrath during the First Age.
Despite his past, the orcs that accompany him are not elves, and they are increasingly distancing themselves from their ancestors, the elves and Iluvatar. The fact that Sauron saw these orcs as disposable caused differences between him and Adar, who would end up turning against Sauron. The objective of the leader of the orcs was to give them a new home that would keep them safe from the light and the Dark Lords such as, in their day, Morgoth, and now Sauron, who only saw them as slaves for their cause. A character who thought that Sauron was no longer among them, and who based on his actions ended up giving him a place for the Dark Lord to carry out all his plans to dominate Middle-earth. Adar is a word that in Sindarin, one of the main languages of the Elves, means father.
Why has Adar’s actor changed in ‘The Rings of Power’?
Joseph Mawle announced in 2022 that he was leaving the role of Adar and, therefore, being part of ‘The Rings of Power’. The reason for making this decision was to be able to focus on other projects, so Sam Hazeldine is in charge of playing the leader of the orcs again.
