Among the new villains introduced during the latest episodes is Kwon Jae-Sung, played by Brandon H. Lee. Despite what it may seem, he is not related to the late Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee.
Who is Brandon H. Lee in ‘Cobra Kai’?
Brandon H. Lee is the name of the actor who plays Kwon Jae-Sung in the sixth and final season of ‘Cobra Kai’. He is the deadliest disciple of the new and reformed Cobra Kai, led by Kim Da-Eun, Kim Sun-Yung and John Kreese. He is John Kreese’s big bet to win the prestigious Sekai Taikai, the martial arts tournament held in Barcelona in the series that will show which dojo has the best fighters.
He is a tragic figure, as he is the last “champion” that Kreese decides to corrupt, urging him to use all his anger in combat to destroy his opponents. During his training, he proved to be extremely rebellious even in such a disciplined environment as the Cobra Kai dojo, earning the wrath of his peers. However, after an altercation with several of them, he was able to wrest the golden medallion representing the best student or strongest student from Yoon Do-Jin, which made him the leader of the dojo during the Sekai Taikai in Barcelona.
During the tournament itself, he draws his match against Robby Keene of Miyagi-Do, but is ultimately defeated, resulting in Cobra Kai’s elimination from the championship. However, when it is announced that members of the Russian Tiger Strike dojo have tested positive for doping, Cobra Kai is given another chance to remain in the competition. During the battle of the dojos, Kwon is accidentally killed when he is impaled by John Kreese’s eunjangdo. Kwon takes this weapon to murder Axel Kovacevic of the Iron Dragons Dojo cold-bloodedly, but Axel kicks him away, causing him to fall on the blade of the weapon.
Brandon H. Lee’s performance as Kwon Jae-Sung is characterized not only by his emotional intensity, but also by his solid taekwondo technique, a discipline in which he has experience as a practitioner. This knowledge allows him to execute realistic and dynamic fight choreography that emphasizes the character’s skill and brutality. His physical prowess, combined with a performance charged with charisma and emotional complexity, made Kwon a tragic and memorable villain. His tragic ending not only underscores Kreese’s overweening ambition, but also adds depth to a character who, despite his lethality, struggles with tremendous inner conflict.
