Who is Knull, God of the Symbiotes and the lord of darkness

The latest Venom: The Last Dance trailer has revealed the movie’s big villain, and it’s none other than Knull, the god of symbiotes. Learn who he is and where he comes from.

Who is Knull, God of the Symbiotes and the lord of darkness

The final entry into what is now the Venom trilogy by Sony Pictures is only a bit over a month away, and the studio has already released the final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance. And what a trailer it is, as during it they revealed what the real main threat of the movie is going to be: Knull, the god of symbiotes.

But surely, that’s got to only be a title. We barely see him on screen in the trailer, sitting menacingly on a throne in a dark room surrounded by monsters. Is he really that powerful?

Who is Knull, God of Symbiotes

The short answer: yes, extremely powerful. The real answer involves a long line of comic storylines, as he’s been involved with almost everything in the Marvel Universe. He created the symbiote race (every single one), slayed celestials and gods, and in certain timelines, has already consumed the entirety of reality.

You see, in the beginning of the Marvel Universe, there existed nothing. The universe was an endless void of darkness: nothing moved, nothing changed. In this time before existence, Knull resided in complete peace, inert and happy. And then the Celestials popped up and began creating planets, galaxies, life, and more. They brought light, and this disturbed Knull, who woke up for the first time in absolute rage.

The light harmed him, for he was a being of pure darkness who ruled over nothingness itself, and so it was its natural enemy. But light also brought with it shadows, and for the first time, Knull saw the first shadow he ever cast. He reached into the shadow, and from it produced All-Black The Necrosword. With this powerful blade he attacked the Celestials, and in a single swift strike decapitated one of them, the first-ever Death in of the universe. The severed head of the Celestial became Knowhere (yes, where the Guardians of the Galaxy created their base in the MCU) which Knull claimed for himself as a forge where he would develop his own powers and crafting living darkness… part of which would be the Symbiotes.

The sword we talked about before, All Black, was actually the very first symbiote to be created, and while Knull wielded it for eons it’s been in the hands of others. It gives the wielder immense power, and fuels their rage against deities themselves. If you’ve only seen the MCU, it’s actually been showed already: Thor: Love and Thunder brought a villain known as Gorr the Butcher of Gods to the big screen, and his whole deal (both in the comics and the movie) is that his hatred of the gods that ignored his pleas led him to obtain All Black, with which he went on a rampage of slaughter.

What are the powers of God, and why is he such a menace?

Well… he’s a literal God in the Marvel Universe. In fact, the oldest one, being there way before existence… uh, existed… So he’s pretty powerful. He controls darkness and emptiness, which means that space is a pretty comfortable environment for him. He’s able to mold and give life to it, and create as much as he destroys, although his nature is rage and violence, and so are his creations.

The symbiotes are literally his children and his weapons, a race that bonds with other creatures and use reflections of Knulls abilities. So anything that a Symbiote can do, so can Knull by default. The most important part here is that Knull is able to see, hear, and feel everything that his symbiotes can see, sometimes taking direct control over them even galaxies away from them. It is a hive mind that serves the dark god, and he collects information and consciousness, or basically the souls of people, to grow and consume.

So… yeah, he can be a pretty big threat, especially now that he seems to be coming directly for Venom and the Earth.
