After months of rumors and anticipation, director Matt Reeves has begun to reveal key details about the upcoming film, The Batman 2. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Reeves shared that the sequel will introduce a villain that has never appeared in a live-action Batman movie before.

While many expected to see iconic characters from Batman’s Rogue Gallery, Reeves’ decision to introduce a fresh antagonist is a bold move that promises to deepen the dark and grounded world he established in the first film. This choice directly benefits the audience by offering a new narrative arc and avoiding familiar territory, ensuring the story feels innovative and unpredictable.

“I had a lot of ideas, and then Mattson Tomlin, who’s my writing partner, we began the process of this by doing another deep dive into the comics, exploring the ideas that I had had,” Reeves began. “So picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that goes into his past and his life, that was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it. And I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before. So we’re excited.”

Who could the new villain be?

The announcement has sent the internet into a frenzy, with several prominent theories emerging. One of the leading candidates is Hush, also known as Thomas Elliot, a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne who becomes consumed by a pathological obsession with him. Hush is known for his intricate, multi-layered plans, which would fit perfectly into the detective-noir style of Reeves’s universe.

Another popular theory suggests the debut of the Court of Owls, a mysterious secret society comprised of Gotham’s wealthiest families. This shadowy organization has historically controlled the city from the sidelines, and their introduction would present a large-scale, systemic threat to the Caped Crusader. A third, less likely possibility, is Scarface, the criminal ventriloquist. While perhaps less exciting to fans, Scarface is a dark and unconventional villain that could add a unique psychological element to the film.
