Why Elden Ring Nightreign features bosses from Dark Souls: “I thought it would be fun”

Junya Ishizaki, the game’s director, admits that fun came before any other element when making this decision.

Elden Ring: Nighterign is one of the most important titles appearing on the horizon of this first half of 2025. From Software’s new title breaks with the usual experience we are used to to focus on bringing its latest formula to the multiplayer environment. On MeriStation we already played in depth and our impressions could not be better. There was one question that remained unanswered: what is the reason for the appearance of bosses from the Dark Souls trilogy, such as The Nameless King and the Centipede Demon? According to the director, the reason is quite simple.

Fanservice in the service of fun: this is the approach of the director of Elden Ring Nightreign

“Having the old bosses in Nightreign has to do with a game design issue,” admits Junya Ishizaki, the game’s director, in an interview with HobbyConsolas. “They serve a game-design purpose rather than a lore purpose. Simply put, we wanted to have a lot of variety. And personally, as a director, I thought it would be fun to take on these bosses in a new setting and with the new game design of Nightreign. We wanted to take advantage of what we had, and we wanted the world of Nightreign to be like an amalgamation of our past experiences and titles, so it seemed like a good opportunity to include some of these bosses.”

Ishizaki points out that the lore of the game parallels that of Elden Ring. This is neither a sequel nor a prequel. No. What Nightreign brings to the story is a branching of the universe around the Nightfarers, the controllable characters. At launch, there will be eight of them, and in all likelihood that number will grow as the months go by. The reason you’ll be facing the Centipede Demon in the games is because it’s just cool.

Elden Ring: Nightreign will be available on May 30th for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
