Why Was Flappy Bird Removed from the App Store?
Flappy Bird will be back soon, but why did it leave?
Many things have happened in the last 10 years in the video game industry, and the phenomenon that some mobile games have reached in that time are the ones that have forged names that will never go away. One of these names is Flappy Bird, a title released in May 2013 that quickly became one of the most addictive titles for mobile phones. Developed by a single person, Vietnamese programmer Dong Nguyen, the game managed to do what bigger studios are slow to do: become a viral hit and appear on the app store charts. However, the game’s meteoric rise was abruptly cut short. On February 10, 2014, Flappy Bird was mysteriously removed from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, leaving fans confused and disappointed. But why did this happen?
Flappy disappeared from the app stores 10 years ago for this reason
The decision behind this abrupt removal boiled down to a combination of personal and ethical reasons on the part of the developer. Dong Nguyen has revealed in various interviews that he did not anticipate the overwhelming success of Flappy Bird, while at the same time feeling guilty about what he saw as the addictive nature and overuse of the game. He originally designed Flappy Bird as a simple pastime, but its addictive nature led to a flood of obsessive players. Many users expressed frustration with the game’s difficulty, and some even reported that it negatively affected their daily lives.
Flappy Bird to return like the phoenix
More than ten years after it was discontinued, Flappy Bird will be back, this time in a version that will bring improvements under a fan group called the Flappy Bird Foundation, which has acquired the rights to the original application. It is promised that in addition to the new features, it will maintain the same addictive gameplay as always. For now, this new version is scheduled to be released in 2025.
