'Wicked' makes box office history with a record that looks hard to beat

The film adaptation of the musical of the same name is a smash hit and is at the top of the genre.

Wicked

The opening of ‘Wicked’ was quite an event at the end of the year. Critics have praised this adaptation of the mythical Broadway musical that tells the story of the witches of the land of Oz. The performances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande may even be rewarded with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. But where ‘Wicked’ has really taken the world by storm is at the box office, where the Jon M. Chu-directed film has been a huge success, breaking records that seem hard to beat these days. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Wicked’ has become the highest-grossing musical adaptation of a Broadway play in history in its first weekend in the U.S., taking in $114 million. It has moved to the top and the gap to the second movie is abysmal.

Wicked' Takes Top Spot on List Full of Classics

Wicked’s $114 million looks even better when compared to the runner-up on the list, ‘Into the Woods’. The Disney musical starring Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt held the top spot until this weekend with $31.1 million in its first weekend. Rounding out the top 10 are some of the world’s most classic films.

In third place is ‘Mamma Mia!’, which premiered in 2008 and is considered one of the greatest musicals in history, defining a generation. In fifth place is ‘Les Miserables’, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. The last three positions are occupied by the musical based on the life of the group ‘The Four Seasons’: ‘Jersey Boys’, an Oscar winner: ‘Chicago’ and ‘Grease’, which needs little presentation.
