Will The Last of Us Season 2 be the last we see of Joel? Its showrunners do not close the possibility
Joel’s future in The Last of Us.
In the penultimate episode of season two of The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal returned to play Joel Miller. The narrative power of the flashbacks not only brought back the actor who played Joel but also showed us something we hadn’t seen in the video games: a teenage Joel with his dad. This situation raises whether we will see Joel again after season two. However, the showrunners leave the possibility open with a simple, “Never say never.”

According to a recent press session (via Polygon), showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin talked about the possibility of seeing more about Joel’s life, especially the period between the death of his daughter Sarah and before he met Ellie, considering that although nothing is written yet, they don’t close the possibilities.
“It’s always good to leave some things a mystery, to let the audience use their imagination to fill in the blanks. Obviously, every once in a while, we tap into those mysteries when they’re important for the story we’re telling here. So, I guess, never say never,” mentioned Druckmann.
“And this season was tricky because it was so driven by this traumatic event: Joel dies,” Mazin muses. “But I think next season, we probably will have a bit more flexibility. And you know, we love a side trip to Indonesia, it’s one of our favorite things to do, so maybe- maybe a side trip to, you know, Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we’ll never know.”
With that, Druckmann ended by mentioning “You can’t predict these things.”
