WWE coming to Netflix: availability by country and what content will be available
Netflix has reached a landmark agreement with WWE to stream live content including weekly SmackDown, RAW and NXT shows, as well as PPV events like Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania, on its streaming platform.
A bombshell for wrestling fans: Netflix has announced that it has acquired the rights to broadcast WWE, including weekly episodes of RAW, SmackDown and NXT, as well as major events like Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble. Alongside the live broadcasts, there will also be a huge historical archive of WCW and ECW shows featuring stars such as Hulk Hogan, rival companies that were eventually absorbed.
The wildest wrestling is coming to Netflix: WWE will arrive in January 2025
The streaming platform’s various official accounts in many countries around the world have announced the arrival of live content and archive episodes of WWE on Netflix starting in January 2025.The countries where this wrestling programming will be broadcast include the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and Spain, and in the absence of official confirmation, it is also assumed that it will be available in any of the more than 190 countries where Netflix is accessible.
The content confirmed for now are the weekly episodes of the three main WWE shows: SmackDown, RAW and NXT, as well as the arrival of a large historical archive of episodes from different eras of both the company and WCW and ECW, its former rivals that were absorbed by WWE. This means that legendary stars such as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Bret Hart will be seen in their heyday, and to round out the offering, major pay-per-view and premium live events such as Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania will also be included in this new programming offering.
In principle, this content will be available in the catalog for all membership and subscription levels and would not imply a price increase or the need to make an additional payment to access it, although we will have to wait for an official confirmation from the platform. In this way, Netflix aims to increase its wide range of entertainment and live events to compete with other platforms such as Max and Amazon’s Prime Video, which already offer sporting events.
The reason this content will be available on Netflix would address the delicate state of the company following the departure of its founder and historic owner, Vince McMahon, following allegations of sexual abuse against him. This, in turn, prompted the company to merge with Endeavor Group Holdings, the owner of the UFC, in September 2023. The new company that resulted from the merger is called TKO Group Holdings, and as part of the strategic changes following the merger, much of the content that was previously exclusive to the WWE Network streaming platform is now coming to Netflix.
Additionally, as a result of this change, WWE Network will cease service in all countries with access to Netflix where WWE content is streamed, indicating that this is part of the plan for the eventual closure of the storied platform.
