Marvel Studios

‘X-Men 97’ gets a release date and a first look with the show’s first official trailer

With a familiar yet very different animation style from the original cartoon, Marvel Studios has finally given us our first look at ‘X-Men 97′

Update:
X-Men 97

It’s been a long time coming, but finally our nostalgia has been fed with the release of the first trailer for ‘X-Men ‘97′. Taking the designs and style of the original X-Men cartoon that gave us some of the best versions of the characters (and the best theme song for the team that is still recognizable today), this revival seems to be something… quite different.

Now confirmed as a direct sequel to the original series, ‘X-Men ‘97′ brings back the original group of heroes with a new animation style in 3D with a 2D shading that emulates the 90′s show. It brings back that guitar-shredding theme music, 90′s fashion, what seems to be a very action-heavy show where the X-Men continue with their lives after the death of Professor X.

‘X-Men ‘97′ is set to premiere on Disney Plus on March 20, only a month away from now, so we don’t have to wait much longer to find out what happens. The trailer teases the return of the Sentinels, Cyclops as the leader of the X-Men, and Magneto, in all of his long-haired glory, seemingly being the inheritor of everything Charles Xavier worked to build. Honestly? It’s nostalgic enough to get old fans like me excited.

So what’s up with the MCU and mutants?

This is the question that many have been trying to figure out for a few decades already, and one for which we still have no answer. While the return of the X-Men to the big screen is almost a given, the MCU has been trying to figure out a way to bring them into the universe for a long time. The Inhumans once were set up as a replacement for them, but after Disney acquired Fox, teases of mutants started appearing both in the background, and very obviously in the forefront of important films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels.

Now at least we know we’ll have some very important mutant showing up in the MCU, as Deadpool and Wolverine is set to bring the Merc with a Mouth and Wolverine together, for a multiverse-spanning romp that is finally part of the Disney canon.

As if that weren’t enough, on February 14 Marvel also revealed the casting for The Fantastic Four, which will premiere on July 25, 2025. While not exactly mutants themselves, Marvel’s first family have a long history of interaction with the X-Men, so they very well could open up the way for Charles Xavier and his team to come through.
