Xbox could integrate Steam? A Microsoft leak suggest this radical change

A recent image leak from Microsoft has sparked a wave of speculation about the future of the Xbox platform. The image, which showed an updated user interface for the Xbox app, revealed a tab clearly labeled “Steam” within a user’s game library. This detail, discovered in an official blog post titled “GDC 2025: Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox”, suggests that Microsoft may be planning to integrate Steam games into its ecosystem, both on PC and potentially on consoles.

One interface for all devices

The leaked image showed the new Xbox interface on a variety of devices: laptops, phones, tablets, the Asus ROG Ally handheld console, and even a TV screen. This cross-platform presentation coincides with Microsoft’s announced strategy to unify the Windows and Xbox experiences under a single interface, which could debut later this year on a partner’s Xbox handheld console.

According to The Verge’s sources, Microsoft is working on an update to the Xbox PC app that will allow it to display all games installed by users, including those purchased from Steam and the Epic Games Store. Although the leaked image only showed the Steam label, this update is expected to include Epic games and label them accordingly. Tom Warren of The Verge clarifies that “I understand Microsoft will label these games accordingly,” and points out that this project is still “in the early stages,” so it may not come to fruition.

Steam on Xbox consoles?

The possibility that Microsoft is considering extending Steam integration beyond PCs is particularly intriguing. The presence of the Steam tab on an interface displayed on a television suggests that Xbox consoles could benefit from this integration. If realized, it would represent a significant shift in the gaming landscape, allowing Xbox users to access a vast library of Steam titles directly from their consoles.

This potential integration could also foster greater interoperability between the PC and Xbox platforms, creating a more unified, accessible, and flexible gaming ecosystem for gamers.
