Yu-Gi-Oh! is the manliest franchise in history, according to a Japanese poll
Nikkei has shared the results of a poll that categorized franchises into masculine and feminine tastes, with Yu-Gi-Oh! Rising as the paragon of manliness
‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ has been with us for almost thirty years since it was born as a manga, and twenty-five years as a collectible card game. The franchise created by the sadly deceased Kazuki Takahashi has left us with all kinds of anecdotes, and the most recent is that according to a Japanese survey, it is the manliest, most masculine franchise of all time.
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the paragon of masculinity according to a Nikkei survey
A survey published in Xtrend in early February 2024 has come to the peculiar conclusion that Yu-Gi-Oh! is the most masculine franchise in history. Xtrend is a Nikkei subdomain specializing in technology and society and has conducted this survey among more than 50,000 Japanese citizens of different age ranges.
The survey was very simple and consisted of rating whether they liked franchises or not, with names as varied as Star Wars, Godzilla, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, One Piece, and Dragon Ball. The result is that at one end of the spectrum we have Yu-Gi-Oh! (the one that men liked the most) and on the opposite ‘’Pent House’, a novel of South Korean origin that is what women like the most in Japan according to this survey.
The survey also leaves us with curious details such as the ‘Star Wars’ saga being mainly liked by men over 50 years old, or that ‘Harry Potter’ is most popular among women between 30 and 40 years old from this country.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: A Story of Fantasy and Card Games
‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’— literally “King of the games” in Japanese — was a manga created by Kazuki Takahashi., originally published in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine between September 1996 and March 2004. It had several sequels and anime adaptations.
The plot of Yu-Gi-Oh! tells the story of Yugi Muto, a teenager who manages to rebuild the millennial puzzle, an ancient Egyptian relic that houses the spirit of an ancient Pharaoh. The pharaoh is a benevolent spirit expert in all types of games, who can “take control” of Yugi to help him resolve conflicts of all kinds by participating in various games. Of all the games shown during Yu-Gi-Oh!, the one that achieved the greatest popularity was the fictional card game Duel Monsters, which served as the basis for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in real life. It was a story focused mainly on a young male audience, and this may have been the reason why in the survey it obtained the result of being the most preferred franchise by men in Japan.
In 1999 the card game Yu-Gi-Oh! was released., arriving to the United States and Europe in 2002. It continues to receive content and expansions today, and it is one of the most popular card games of all time along with Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. As a franchise, it has given rise to all kinds of merchandising such as figures, video games, and various accessories for the card game.
The most recent and popular video games in the series are Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Master. The first is available on PC and mobiles, and the second on all platforms. Both are free and allow us to play the card game with different types of rules and card lists.
