Zootopia 2 has made cinema history, snatching an extraordinary box office record from Avengers: Endgame itself

Since its release at the end of last November, Zootopia 2 has established itself as the must-see family film this Thanksgiving. Disney’s new 3D animated film has taken numerous markets around the globe by storm during its first few days in theaters, and in China, it has been spectacularly well-received. This feature film has overtaken Avengers: Endgame in China, taking away its record as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country in its first 24 hours.

Zootopia 2 takes China by storm and breaks Avengers: Endgame’s record

Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019 and became, at the time, the highest-grossing film in history. It was the culmination of a cultural milestone that had been in the making for more than a decade: the Marvel Cinematic Universe depicting the ultimate battle against Thanos, and how, despite the forces of good failing in Avengers: Infinity War, they were presented with a new opportunity to set things right. In China, this film was very well received, grossing $79 million on its first day in theaters.

However, it took six years for the record for the highest-grossing Hollywood film on its first day in China to be broken. According to MovieWeb, this milestone now belongs to Zootopia 2, which was released on November 26. The Disney film grossed $104.8 million on its opening day in China, making it the first American film to break the $100 million barrier in 24 hours. However, and as The Hollywood Reporter points out, as for the five-day box office, Zootopia 2 stays behind Avengers: Endgame with $272 millions versus the $330.5 million the Marvel film achieved.

This event shows that, although there is currently a certain fatigue with superhero movies, children remain an extremely profitable and enduring market segment. The new story of Nick the fox and Judy the rabbit has won over children in different countries around the world.

The international success of Zootopia 2 reveals something deeper than just a box office record: in an increasingly unpredictable market, major studios like Disney are still capable of building emotional worlds with great appeal for the whole family. While Hollywood seeks to reinvent itself after several years of decline, the triumph of this sequel reminds us that good stories for all audiences remain as solid and reliable a bet as ever.
