House of the Dragon’s second season promises an important change of pace

The series’ showrunner hints at more blood, spectacle and a new pace similar to the middle stretch of Game of Thrones, as well as an heir to the Tyrion role.

Update:
House of the Dragon’s second season promises an important change of pace

House of the Dragon’s first season has come to an end and left us with a pretty good aftertaste. While many of us believed we’d lost all interest in Westeros after the controversial series ending in Thrones, the Targaryens have proved us blissfully wrong. Even so, it seems like HBO has managed to blindside all of the viewers with a surprisingly slow burn. At the end of this part of the story, they still have plenty of aces under their sleeves, open plots, and mysteries on hand to pull us in.

Ryan Condal, HotD’s showrunner, has spoken to The Sunday Times about how will the series’ pace change from the second season onwards:

“We will get to the spectacle,” Condal said. “But you have to understand these people’s complexities before they’re thrown into war. Series 2 will hit the rhythms people came to expect from the middle run of Game of Thrones, but it will have been earned, and viewers will feel the tragedies because we put the work in.”

The House of the Dragon will have its own Tyrion

Condal also hinted at the fact that those viewers that miss Tyrion’s sharpness and cleverness will feel right at home in season 2. The showrunner promised that in writing the next batch of episodes, the team aimed to add “natural pathways into moments of levity” into the plot. While he admitted that Tyrion Lannister, portrayed by Peter Dinklage, had that effect on lockdown during Game of Thrones, they believe that a natural heir for that sort of character is Daemon Targaryen.

“I think Matt Smith is very funny,” he said. “If there is one character that does not care, it is Daemon.”

The only bad news in all of this is that we’re still far away from enjoying all of this: House of the Dragon won’t return to screens until 2024 at its earliest. George R.R. Martin, creator of the franchise, has already confirmed how many seasons and episodes there will be in total, but it’s still difficult to imagine having to wait for so long.
