Sonic Frontiers: SEGA insists the game is neither an RPG or similar to Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The head of the studio explains once more what the game’s nature is, distancing itself from the titles to which it’s been compared.

Update:
Sonic Frontiers: SEGA insists the game is neither an RPG or similar to Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There’s a lot of expectation from players now that Sonic Frontiers is about to launch. The game has been presented as the first open-world game for SEGA’s legendary blue hedgehog, so imaginations have been running wild. This isn’t something so surprising since even from its reveal we’ve seen videos that imply a huge world to explore with complete freedom of movement.

In fact, many users have taken to social media to share their predictions, in which you can usually find titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles, and even Shadow of the Colossus. And this doesn’t seem to feel right for the man in charge of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka.

It’s not “like zelda”, nor is it an RPG

During an interview with Gamehub TV for their show, Shack News, Iizuka has been very clear about the situation: “It’s an action game.” He was very firm with his answer, before expanding a little bit more about what that means: “When people talk about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, they do so thinking of a role playing game, and that is not at all the game we’re making,” he explained. He went on to mention that even if there’s a lot of liberty for the players to explore the vast open areas of the game, the studio’s goal was always to “implement in them the linear high speed action” that the series is known for.

We’ll soon be able to figure out what all of this means this coming November 8, when Sonic’s new and mysterious adventure, Sonic Frontiers, finally lands on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
