How to detect and catch Ditto in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

Okay, you already know where Ditto appears, but there's a problem: Ditto doesn't show its true form in the game world until we engage in combat with it. The mechanics for detecting it are very similar to its Pokémon GO version: we must approach any other Pokémon that appears in Ditto's habitat; if it's a Ditto, it will reveal its true form when we engage in battle.

We target a wild Pokémon with ZL; in this case we know it is a Ditto because we have Vigoroth registered in the PokéDex while Ditto is not. When we engage it in battle, it reveals that it was a Ditto.

We target a wild Pokémon with ZL; in this case we know it is a Ditto because we have Vigoroth registered in the PokéDex while Ditto is not. When we engage it in battle, it reveals that it was a Ditto.

One way to be sure to find Ditto is to "target" the Pokémon using the ZL button on the right JoyCon. Several things can happen:

  • If when pointing at a Pokémon that we already have registered in the PokéDex, its name appears, then it is a specimen of that Pokémon.
  • If when pointing at a Pokémon that is already registered in the PokéDex, a question mark appears where its name should be, it could be a Ditto, a Zorua or a Zoroark.
  • If when pointing at a Pokémon that we already have registered in the PokéDex and its name appears as "Ditto", it is indeed a Ditto in disguise.

Despite this, Ditto's appearance rate is relatively low compared to other Pokémon in these areas. Nevertheless, this "trick" will help you not to go crazy when it comes to finding Ditto... or a Zorua or Zoroark.
