Fumito Ueda of Team ICO to announce a new game in 2023

With New Year’s greetings from GenDesign, Fumito Ueda’s studio points towards the next few months for surprises and perhaps the announcement of a new game.

Update:
Fumito Ueda of Team ICO to announce a new game in 2023

After a long time without updates about Fumito Ueda’s next project, it seems like 2023 has been chosen by the creator to finally reveal what he’s been working on for all these years since the release of The Last Guardian, back in 2016. Ueda, who created other classics like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, has left it clear before that he likes to take his time on whatever he’s working on, which means that fans have had to adapt to being patient, sometimes for years at a time.

The Year of Fumito Ueda

When the creator left Sony before the release of The Last Guardian, he started a new studio called genDESIGN. It’s from the studio’s official Twitter account that they’ve sent a New Year’s message, both to celebrate the start of 2023 and to reveal that we might find out more about Ueda’s new game very soon. The post speaks about 2023 being “finally a year where there will be much to talk about,” accompanied by an illustration by the man himself.

“Happy new year. It's finally a year where we can deliver a lot of topics to everyone! We are doing our best, so please look forward to it,” says the team's message. This would officially be genDESIGN’s first game ever, with the team being composed by Ueda himself and other Team ICO veterans, which was Sony’s studio responsible for the development of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, largely lauded as one of the best video games in history and which received a fantastic remake in 2018 by Bluepoint Games.

The team also thanked its fans, and revealed that they currently have open positions within the company:“Thank you for your continued support in the year. At genDESIGN, we are looking for colleagues regardless of career or new graduates for the project currently under development.”

This title would also be one of the first games ever published by Epic Games Publishing, which after garnering several timed exclusive deals for releases on PC via the Epic Games Store, decided to begin their own publishing company. Ueda’s game will be one of them, alongside Remedy Entertainment’s net game and Playdead’s upcoming project.
