We explain, roughly, the main themes that will be developed during the third season of Lucasfilm's series.

The Mandalorian's new trailer breakdown, what's in store for Season 3?

Lucasfilm had promised a trailer for the third season of The Mandalorian and they didn't disappoint. The Star Wars series returns on March 1st on Disney+ with more adventures starring Din Djarin and little Grogu. As usual in this kind of trailers, there are left glimpsed elements and other more solid ones that we can already comment on in this breakdown.

The article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Before watching the third season of The Mandalorian it is essential to take a look at The Book of Boba Fett, the first spin-off of the series. The three episodes featuring Din Djarin lay the groundwork from which the next few episodes start.

On the one hand, Mando lost his status within the Mandalorian cult (actually, one of the religion's sects) because he removed his helmet in the presence of another living being. The Armorer stripped him of his status and urged him to return to Mandalore to fulfill an ancient legend. Only then will he be readmitted.

At the end of The Mandalorian's second season, Mando and Grogu's paths separated. The baby left with Luke Skywalker to resume his Jedi training, but they were reunited in The Book of Boba Fett. The master offered him a choice: become a Padawan or return to the Mandalorian: he chose the latter.

A group of Mandalorians... led by Din Djarin?

"Our people are scattered, like the stars in the galaxy," says the Mandalorian right at the start of the trailer. "What are we, what do we stand for?". On-screen, several cult members, apparently led by the Mandalorian himself. The action takes place on a currently unknown rocky planet.

As he explains to the Armorer in a later sequence, the trip to Mandalore is crucial. The goal is to atone for his sin and become part of the Mandalorian cult again. The ruins of Sundari, the city of Mandalore destroyed by the Galactic Empire, appear briefly in the trailer.

"Being a Mandalorian doesn't just mean knowing how to fight, you also have to know how to navigate the galaxy." Din Djarin teaches Grogu the ways of the cult? Aboard their N-1 ship, the Naboo starfighter provided by Peli Motto, the duo search for their next destination. One of them is Nevarro, now under Greef Karga, who has flourished since the New Republic appointed him as protector. We recall that Cara Dune will not make an appearance because Gina Carano was fired.

Flashback to Order 66, Coruscant and old acquaintances

Grogu was a Jedi padawan at the time Palpatine issued Order 66. In fact, he was inside the temple when clone troopers under the command of Anakin Skywalker - by then renamed Darth Vader - stormed the compound with the objective of killing every last Jedi, including the children. Little Baby Yoda was spared, though we still don't know exactly how. The trailer shows several Knights with their lit sabers in front of the gate. Will Hayden Christensen return as Lord Vader in The Mandalorian as well?

Coruscant, the capital of the Republic and the Galactic Empire, returns in The Mandalorian. The huge city also previews the return of other characters from the series: one of them is Dr. Pershing, the same one who wanted to use Grogu for dark experiments. Will they be used for the creation of the Great Leader Snoke or perhaps for the resurrection of Palpatine? Another character we see is Carson Teva, a captain in the New Republic.

We won't go into the numerous references and small details, although the trailer is packed with them. What also does not appear explicitly is the conflict between Bo-Katan Kryze and Mando, which points to be one of the great subjects of the season. Din Djarin is the current bearer of the darksaber, an ancestral weapon that grants the legitimacy to rule Mandalore... and whoever wants to rule must obtain it in combat, it is not enough to give it up voluntarily.
