Update:
A Resident Evil 7 prototype has leaked, with Leon and Sherry as protagonists

More than five years later, new details have surfaced about the development of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the return to the roots of Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise. Just as it happened with previous titles of this franchise, Resident Evil 7 went through several development changes, including a very early one in which the concept of the game as we know it is very different from the final result, since Leon and Sherry would have been the protagonists of this seventh numbered installment. Below we’ll tell you everything that has transpired:

Resident Evil 7 was going to star Leon and Sherry according to leaks

On February 8, popular leaker Dusk Golem/Aesthetic Gamer came across several images that turned out to be concept art of the initial version of Resident Evil 7, called "Resident Evil 6.5″ by many alluding to Resident Evil 3.5, the prototype of Resident Evil 4. According to Dusk Golem, this discarded version had similar gameplay to that of Resident Evil 6, and starred Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin. The action would have taken place in a fictional city in Europe inspired by Venice, Italy.

In addition, there would also be a marine bio-organic weapon (B.O.W.) and moments of decision making with slowed down and limited time inspired by Telltale games. Apparently, sometime between 2012 and 2013 there was a polished demo between 30 and 60 minutes long, but eventually all created content was discarded in favor of the Resident Evil 7 that we know now.

There is no trace of Sherry Birkin in these two images corresponding to early concept art for Resident Evil 7. However ,the little that is shown gives us an idea of the direction that Capcom would have wanted to take at first with this installment.
