The Mandalorian: how long did Grogu train with Luke Skywalker?

The Mandalorian is back, and while little Grogu has chosen to go back with The Mandalorian to live more adventures, the creators revealed how long he trained with Luke Skywalker.

The Mandalorian: how long did Grogu train with Luke Skywalker?

Not days or months have passed, but years since Luke Skywalker took Grogu as his Padawan. So explained John Favreau, showrunner of the series, in a round table on the occasion of the premiere of the third season of The Mandalorian. The scriptwriter has clarified that the child has also been in Mando's company for a long time so both have developed a mutual affection.

“He is somebody who has spent time in both worlds. We know that he started off earlier in the Jedi temple. We've seen flashbacks that speak to that and then we know that he's been rescued and spent many years with The Mandalorian. Went back with Luke [Skywalker]. Now we've been two years apart from him there training,” he said. “What's interesting is that as he chooses his friend The Mandalorian because he's developed an attachment.”

Luke faced the same dilemma

According to Favreau, this also reflects the decision that Luke had to make when he chose to help his friends. Although Yoda urged him to complete his training, the then Padawan had seen a vision of Leia and Han through a revelation of the Force, so he chose to leave the training behind and go to the rescue of his friends.

Will Grogu walk the path of the Jedi again, as Luke did years ago? Jon Favreau doesn't rule it out. Speaking to Total Film, the showrunner hinted that the child has the potential to unite the two cultures, Jedi and Mandalorian, and to move in both worlds.

The third season of The Mandalorian premieres March 1 on Disney +; the eight episodes will be broadcast every Wednesday. 2023 will also be the year of the next two spin-offs from the Mandalorian. After The Book of Boba Fett —important to see before season 3—Star Wars will be expanded with Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew.
