Disney is being “very careful” with Star Wars after Solo failed at the box office

It seems like plans have changed for the Star Wars franchise at Disney, with the company revealing how careful they’re being after Solo: A Star Wars Story

Update:
Disney is being “very careful” with Star Wars after Solo failed at the box office

Disney CEO Bob Iger has just revealed that the company is being extremely careful about what they plan to release in the future for Star Wars movies, after Solo: A Star Wars Story ended up being a huge box office bust.

As reported by Deadline, Iger’s statement was made during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, in which he spoke about the future of Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar in general. Referring specifically to Solo’s performance back in 2018 (with only $393.2 million dollars earned worldwide), the Disney boss revealed that it was a “disappointing” experience that “gave us pause” to everything they had planned back then. He concluded that that “maybe the cadence was a little too aggressive.”

This, however bad it may sound, is not a definite goodbye of the sci-fi saga in theaters: the company is still working on more Star Wars films, but according to Iger they’re “going to make sure when we make one, it’s the right one. So we're being very careful there."

A new era of Star Wars

While it failed in the international box office, Solo has managed to gather a small following of fans that did enjoy the movie. Taking place years before Episode IV, the movie follows Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) and Chewbaccka as they join a scoundrel in an incredibly dangerous heist. The film acts as an origin story for the duo, and answers a couple of questions fans had about them and The Millenium Falcon after decades of enjoying the original trilogy. It did not perform well, however, and it resulted in a complete overhaul of plans for the company.

Lucasfilm has since focused entirely on live-action and animated TV series for Disney Plus, with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau almost acting as narrative leads for the entire universe of interconnected stories. Now we have The Mandalorian, Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and many more. But we haven’t seen a new release on theaters since 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

Wil we see a return to the big screen soon?
