The Last of Us Season 2 could be “radically” different from the games, according to the series’ showrunner

Craig Mazin stated that the second season of The Last of Us on HBO could go in an extremely different direction from what the game’s sequel presented on PS4.

With the first season of The Last of Us finished, all eyes are now on the second, which was already confirmed by HBO. Anyone would think that it is enough to revisit the sequel to the game on which it is based to figure out what can we expect, but one of the showrunners of the series, Craig Mazin, warns that Season 2 could be "radically” different.

“[Next season] will be different. Just as this season was different. Sometimes it will be different radically and sometimes it will be barely different at all," explained Mazin in a statement for ComicBook.com. “But it's going to be different and it will be its own thing. It won't be exactly like the game. It will be the show that Neil and I want to make."

Considered "the best video game adaptation ever made”, The Last of Us has surprised on its way through HBO and it has been largely due to the success of the changes and additions that it has been making (such as the prologues of the first and second chapter, the new story for bill and frank of episode three, etc.), but also for the respect and care with which it has treated the original material.

Will there be multiple seasons for the second game?

However, it is true that The Last of Us: Part 2 was full of new things that divided the community (a new protagonist, without going any further) and its story always seemed to be split in two in the middle of the adventure. If we add to that the fact that it practically doubled the duration of the original (we went from 15 to 24 hours, according to HowLongToBeat), most likely the second game in the franchise will require various seasons to be adapted and not just one, even more so if we take into account that one of the few criticisms of the series so far is that certain moments (especially at the end) seem a bit rushed.

And who knows, maybe that would give Naughty Dog a few years to make The Last of Us: Part 3 of which the studio has already spoken several times, and then they could adapt it too.
