MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has announced that sluggers Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals and Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers have been selected to play in the 2022 All-Star Game.

Through the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ association, Manfred recently acquired the prerogative to add legacy selections, or players who deserved special recognition, to each team.

Pujols and Cabrera: Hall of Fame stats

Pujols and Cabrera both have the numbers required to be voted into the Hall of Fame. The two, along with baseball great and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, comprise an elite group of MLB batters to rack up 3,000 hits, 500 homers, and 600 doubles.

It will be Pujols’ 11th All-Star selection in 22 seasons with the league. He started his professional career with St. Louis in 2001 and returned to the team for the 2022 season, after which he has indicated that he will retire.

Pujols and Cabrera: All-Star Game regulars

It will be Cabrera’s 12th All-Star Game appearance since he made his MLB debut in 2003 with the Florida Marlins. He is nearing the end of his eight-year, $248 million contract with the Tigers, which is guaranteed through 2023.

MLB will announce the starters for the game at the selection show that will air on ESPN on Friday at 7 p.m. ET. The league will release the full rosters for the American and National Leagues on Sunday.

The 2022 MLB All-Star Game will take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California on Tuesday, July 19.
